Prompt for "This World of Ours"

Due on Saturday, December 18 by 11:59pm

Write a technical paper review, and in your discussion, please address the following questions.

  • Jokes aside, what is Mickens’ key point? (hint: it’s about security research)
  • Suppose you run a funding agency (e.g., the National Science Foundation, DARPA, etc.) and it is your job to choose which security research proposals are funded. You will likely see proposals for what Mickens calls “avant garde horrors” as well as more mundane proposals. You have a finite amount of money, which is never enough to fund all of the proposals; it’s often not not even enough to fund all the good proposals. So which proposals do you fund? Do you value any category more than any other? Since we’re all computer scientists here, can you articulate any criteria that might make deciding easier (i.e., mechanical)?

Turn-in instructions: commit your response to your reading responses Github repository. Please use the LaTeX template supplied in your repository. Be sure to turn in both your source .tex file and a compiled .pdf file.

You can generate a PDF from the template with the command:
$ pdflatex reading11.tex
Please be sure to name your generated PDF reading11.pdf. You will need to install TeXLive on your personal computer to build LaTeX documents: macOS, Windows, Linux. CS Lab machines already have TeXLive installed.
